I desperately want to get up to the Great Lakes area while we're living in the Midwest but we've been spoiled having such a big lake right outside of Bloomington down the road. I had a sweet taste of summer over the weekend with my first boat float of the season on Lake Monroe. It was a little windy but once we found the perfect cove to hang out in the afternoon was perfection. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the summer sun is just getting started. Here are a few tips to keep your skin safe this summer.

Three Tips to Stay Skin Smart this summer

1. Apply Sunblock Early: Despite so much research available about skin care I feel like this is forgotten so often. It does you no good applying when you're already hot because you're just going to sweat it off; when you're getting dressed just go ahead and apply. I got hooked on the Australian brand Blue Lizard when we lived in Hawaii and it is by far my favorite. No crazy chemicals and it is thick so you know its on there. It's stark white when it goes on but keep rubbing and it will disappear.

2. Cover Up: I discovered Coolibar at The Southern C Summit in Charleston, South Carolina in April and I'm smitten with their UPF protective accessory and clothing line for summer. Clothing is the single most effective form of sun protection and it is our first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. 3. Don't Forget Your Shades: Your eyes need just as much protection as your skin and there are so many good looking frames these days that can provide the protection you need. I prefer polarized lenses because they make colors really pop but just make sure the shades you choose protect against UVA and UVB rays. I’m loving these Costas made from recycled fishing nets.

Best thing about all of these items is they barely take up room in your suitcase or beach bag so no excuses! Just make sure you stock your cooler with ice cold refreshments.
